Define implicit and explicit communication
Explicit: info explicity conveyed (obvious)
Implicit: info conveyed in and around the message (inferred)
What is non-verbal comms (meta-communication)
various signals that can be done without verbalizing.
hand gentures, eye contact or lack of, distances between two people, facial expressions or body orientation
we communicate 75% of the time non verbally
it complements or sometimes replaces verbal comms - it reducdes ambiguity
you can signal your attitude via non verbal comms
why is verbal comms important for pilots
because they sit side by side facing the front so cannot see non verbal signals.
factors influencing the effectiveness & reliability of communication
Intelligibility: rushed or poor phrasing creates misunderstanding
Ambiguity: clear or unambigous enunciation aids understanding
**Uniqueness: similar sounds words and call signs cause confusion

Amount of info: short term memory can’t hold enough info for long
Mix of languages: not all airfileds use english as per ICAO standards
what is cockpit authority gradient
situation where you might not be able to communicate or voice an opinion in the cockpit because you are not the PIC or you are unexperienced in comparison
can cause accidents
what does it mean ‘ one cannot NOT communicate’
that even when you are silent, inactive, and exhibit non-verbal behaviour, you are still communicating something with meaning
