automation Flashcards
how is communication affected by automation
communication and coordination calls for an even greater effort on the part of the crew
what are the advantages of human vs machine
creativity , innovation and adaptibility
blinkered concentration vs selective attention
blinkered concentration is when you focus on one specific aspect only and unconsciously ignoring everything else
selective - is the ‘deliberate’ focus on one aspect and willingly ignoring everything else.
complacency
unjustified self confidence
what role should automation play in respect to flight safety
automation should be used as aid, not as the end itself
how can the effects of reliance on automated systems be mitigated
1) treat automation like a separate crew member who needs to be checked
2) ensure they are user friendly and intuitive
3) include selected modes in briefing
automation downfall…
eliminiates some aspects required in flying that might be needed during an emergency that a pilot would be competent at doing
both aural and visual alerts in automation reduce crew communication
autopoilot might resolve a problem without pilot noticing
**reduction in flying skills **or pilot might believe that their expereince / confidence is degratding
slip ups might happen as you configure the modes on the automation system due to the various sub programs and sub functions involved.
Mode awareness
It’s a situational awaress of the modes of your automation
pilot knows which modes are currently active on **his autopilot and throttle **so he can predict aircraft behaviour and future manoevres
What is not mode awarenes
Below are not aspects of mode awareness, but more ‘technical knowledge’:
knows how to select suitable mode in any given flight situation
can override a mode if need be
Negative effects of automation on pilots can be elleviated by
degrading to a low level automation or manual flying
automation irony
computers perform a task better than humans but at the same time it performs a task that we want to be better at
the following operations are performed better via automation
1) waiting for infrequent phenomena
2) long term control of a set value (holding trajectory)
3)monitoring certain values are not exceeded
