Nasal Cavity and Pterygopalatine fossa Flashcards
What cartilages make up the external nose?
2 Lateral nasal cartilages, 2 alar cartilages and the septal cartilage in the nasal septum
What bones make up the external nose?
Frontal bone, nasal bones, frontal processes of the maxilla bones, and bony part of nasal septum
What is the one thing within the nasal cavity that is not lined with nasal mucosa?
Vestibule
The olfactory area has a specialized nasal mucosa that contains what?
Peripheral nerve endings for CN I
What are the 4 nasal passages?
Sphenoethmoid recess, superior nasal meatus, middle nasal meatus, inferior nasal meatus
What is another word for meatus?
Turbinate
What drains into the sphenoethmoid recess?
Sphenoid sinus
What drains into the superior nasal meatus?
Ethmoid sinus
What drains into the middle nasal meatus?
Frontal sinus and the maxillary sinus
What drains into the inferior nasal meatus?
Nasolacrimal duct
What are the 5 main arteries supplying the nasals cavity?
Anterior and posterior ethmoidal, sphenopalatine, lateral nasal, superior labial
What are the 3 main arteries that give off the branches to supply the nose?
Opthalmic, maxillary, facial
What is the area where the 5 main arteries come together within the nasal cavity?
Kiesselbach area
What is important about kiesselbach area?
Site of profuse bleeding
What is the venous drainage of the nasal cavity?
Opthalmic, sphenopalatine and facial veins
Nosebleed
Epistaxis
What are the contents of the pterygopalatine fossa?
Pterygopalatine ganglion, maxillary nerve and 3rd portion of the maxillary artery
Superior border of pterygopalatine fossa
Body of sphenoid
Inferior border of pterygopalatine fossa
Pyramidal plate of palatine
Medial border of pterygopalatine fossa
Perpendicular plate of palatine
Lateral border of pterygopalatine fossa
Infratemporal fossa
What connects the pterygopalatine fossa with the infratemportal fossa?
Pterygomaxillary fissure
Anterior border of pterygopalatine fossa
Maxilla
Posterior border of pterygopalatine fossa
Pterygoid process of sphenoid
What exits the inferior orbital fissure?
Zygomatic nerve, infraorbital nerve and infraorbital artery
What joins in the pterygoid canal?
Greater petrosal nerve and Deep petrosal nerve
Describe how parasympathetic fibers can reach the lacrimal gland
- Presynaptic parasympathetic fibers travel on the greater petrosal nerve (CN VII) through the pterygoid canal to synapse at the pterygopalatine ganglion
- Fibers then jump on the the maxillary nerve
- Continue down the zygomatic nerve and use a communicating branch to reach the lacrimal nerve (V1)
- Fibers reach the lacrimal gland
What carries post-synaptic sympathetic fibers to the pterygopalatine fossa and do they synapse at the pterygopalatine ganglion?
Deep petrosal nerve and nope
