Indications of aspirin
Post MI protection against clotting disorders fever mild-moderate pain anti-inflammatory for RA, Tendinitis, Bursitis
Contraindications of aspirin
Under 19 years old during a fever - can lead to Reye’s syndrome.
Do not give higher doses in pregnancy - category D
Contraindications of NSAIDs
Pregnancy
Hx of MI
Cautions with corticosteroids, anticoagulants, ASA, alcohol
BBW for NSAIDs
Increased risk of GI bleed, CV events, hospitalization, death
what is cyclooxygenase (COX)
An enzyme that converts arachidonic acid to prostaglandins or leukotrienes
Non-selective NSAID
Naproxen (Aleve)
COX-2 inhibitor
Celecoxib (Celebrex)
Celebrex contraindication
Hx of MI or current unstable angina, increases risk of CV issues
Use with caution in diabetics
Celebrex
Major concern with APAP
Liver toxicity
Tylenol MOA
NOT an NSAID- does not inhibit COX well in the presence of inflammation - in the periphery.
Inhibits COX in CNS reducing fever and pain.
