GI - unit B Flashcards
First line treatment for constipation
Osmotic laxatives (lactulose, MiraLax)
bulk-forming agents
psyllium (Metamucil)
Citrucel
How do surfactant laxatives work?
facilitate the movement of water into the stool by lowering surface tension.
Examples of surfactant laxatives
Docusate sodium (stool softeners)
Downside of mineral oil
decreases absorption of fat-soluble vitamins
Act as an irritant to the colon and precipitate peristalsis
Stimulant laxatives (Bisacodyl, Senna, Ex-Lax)
Frequently abused by those with eating disorders
Stimulant laxatives
two common laxatives used for children
Miralax
Lactulose
First-line treatment for children with fecal impaction
Polyethylene glycol (MiraLax)
How do opioids treat diarrhea
Activate opioid receptors in GI tract, decrease intestinal motility.
Examples of opioids to treat diarrhea
Lomotil (diphenoxylate and atropine)
Loperamide (Imodium)
First line treatment of diarrhea in pregnancy
Loperamide (Imodium)
Category B
Structural analog of meperidine. Causes decreased secretions and decreased peristalsis.
Loperamide (Imodium)
Diphenoxylate structural analog of meperidine. Causes decreased secretions and decreased peristalsis. Atropine is an anticholinergic, which helps dry body fluids and also slows gut movement.
Lomotil
Antisecretory, antimicrobial and anti-infalmmatory
Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol)
