Ligament/O
Ligament
BURSA
BURS/O
Sac of Synovial fluid located near tendons, ligaments and bones
TENDONS
TENDON/O
TENDIN/O
TEN/O
Connect muscle to bones
Abduction - moving away from midline of body
Ion means process of
Ab means remove
Duct means move or carry
ADDUCTION
Movement toward midline of the body
CIRCUMDUCTION
CIRCUM means AROUND
Movement in a circular direction
Fibrous joints
- inflexible layers of dense connective tissue
- hold the bones tightly together
- in adults they are know as sutures
Eg skull bones are sutured together
Fontanelle
Soft spot on newborns
Cartilaginous joins
Only allow slight movement
Eg . Connects ribs to sternum ( breast bone )
- pubic symphysis connects the pelvic bones
Synovial joints
Permits variety of motions
Eg ball and socket joint of hip
- hinge joint of elbow
- hinge joint of knee
Synovial capsule
Outermost layer of strong fibrous tissue that resembles a sleeve as it surrounds the joint
Synovial membrane
Lines the capsule and secretes Synovial fluid
Synovial fluid
Flows within the Synovial cavity
Acts as lubricant
Ligaments
Bands of fibrous tissue that form joints by connecting one bone to another
