Mod 2 Genetics Flashcards
Geneticist
Specialist in the study of genetics and role of genes in health and disease
Dominant gene
When dominant gene is Inherited from either parent offspring will inherit
Eg freckles, Huntington disease
Recessive
Same recessive gene is Inherited from both parents offspring will have the condition.
Eg sickle cell anemia
When recessive gene is inherited from one parent offspring does not have the condition
Genome
Complete set of genetic information of an organism.
Chromosome
Genetic structure located within the nucleus of each cell.
- made up of DNA molecules
Somatic cell
All cells except gametes(sex cells)
- contains 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs
-
Gamete cell
Sperm or ovum
Each has 23 chromosomes
DNA
- contains the chromosome pairs
- inside the nucleus of a cell
- red blood cells ( erythrocytes ) has NO DNA… because they don’t have a nucleus
- identical twins have identical DNA
Genetic mutation
Somatic cell mutation- not transferred to next generation
Gamete cell mutation- transferred to next generation
Genetic engineering
Splicing of genes for scientific or medical purpose
Eg production of human insulin from modified bacteria
