Mod 3 - Steucture Of Bones Flashcards
Bone
- second hardest tissue in human body
- dental enamel is first
Periosteum
Peri means surrounding
Tough fibrous tissue that forms the outermost covering of bone
Compact or cortical bone
Dense protective outer layer of bones
Accounts to more than 75% of bone matter
Spongy or cancellous bone
- porous
- lighter and weaker , susceptible to fracture
- red bone marrow is inside this
- found in ends of long bones , pelvic , ribs, vertebrae of spinal column
Medullary cavity
Central cavity of the bone
Endosteum
End means within
Tissue that lines medullary cavity
Hemopoietic or hematopoietic
Poietic means formation
Pertaining to the formation of blood cells
Red bone marrow
- is Hemopoietic tissue Manufactures - red blood cells - hemoglobin - white blood cells - thrombocytes
Yellow bone marrow
Functions as fat storage area
- composed of fat cells
Cartilage
Rubbery blue white connective tissue
- shock absorber
Articular cartilage
- Covers the surface of bones where that articulate or come together to form joints
- makes possible the smooth joint movements
- protects bone from rubbing each other
Meniscus
Curved, fibrous cartilage found in some joints like the
Knees and
Temporomandibular joint of the jaw
Diaphysis
Shaft of a long bone
Epiphysis
Plural - epiphyses
- Wider ends of long bones like femur
- covered by articulated cartilage
- proximal epiphysis
- distal epiphysis
- red bone marrow is the epiphysis produces red blood cells
Foramen
Plural- foramina
Opening in a bone though which blood vessels , nerves and ligaments pass
Eg spinal cord passes through foramen magnum of the occipital bone
