Mod 2 - Tissues Flashcards
Tissues
Group or layer of similarly specialized cells
Histology
Study of tissues
Histologist
Specialist who studies tissues
Epithelial tissue
- Forms protective covering for all the internal and external surfaces of organs
- these tissues form glands
Epithelium
Specialized Epithelial tissue that forms epidermis of the skin and mucous membrane
Endothelium
Specialized epithelial tissue that lines the blood and lymph vessels, body cavities, glands and organs
Connective tissues
Support and connect organs and other body tissues
Dense connective tissue - bone cartilage form joints and framework of body
Adipose tissue- fat . Provides padding insulation and support
Loose connective tissue - surrounds various organs and supports nerve cells and blood vessels
Liquid connective tissue - are blood and lymph transport nutrients and waste products throughout the body
Muscle tissue
Contains cells with specialized ability to contract and relax
Nerve tissue
Contains cells with specialized ability to react to stimuli and conduct electrical impulses
Aplasia
a - means without
-plasia means formation
Absence of organ or tissue
Hypoplasia
Incomplete development of an organ or tissue due to deficiency in number of cells
Anaplasia
Ana- backward
Plasia- formation
Change in structure of cells and their orientation to each other
Eg cancer cells
Dysplasia
Dys-bad
Abnormal development or growth of cells ,tissues or organs
Hyperplasia
Excessive formation
Enlarging of an organ due to abnormal increase in number of cells in the tissues
