Q

Pleura

A
  • thin moist slippery membrane that covers outer surface of lungs
  • and lines inner surface of thoracic cavity
  1. Parietal pleura
    - outer layer of Pleura
    - lines walls of thoracic cavity
    - covers diaphragm
    - forms the sac containing each lung
    - is attached to chest wall
    - parietal means ‘ relating to walls of a cavity ‘
  2. Visceral pleura
    - inner layer of pleura
    - attaches directly to lungs
    - visceral means ‘relating to internal organs’
  3. Pleural cavity
    - known as pleural space
    - thin fluid filled space between parietal and visceral pleura membranes
    - fluid acts as lubricant
    - this allows membranes to slide over easily during respiration
