Mod2 - CH 2 Structures Of The Body Flashcards
Cells
Basic structural and functional units of the body.
Cells have specialized roles and die after a determined life span
Cytology
cyt = cell
Study of Anatomy Physiology Pathology Chemistry of a cell
Cytologist
Specialist in study and analysis of cell
Cell membrane
Tissue that surrounds and protects the contents of a cell from the external environment
Cytoplasm
Is the material within the cell membrane that is not part of the nucleus
Nucleus
Center of a cell
- controls activity of cell
- helps the cell divide
Stem cells
Unspecialized cells that are able to renew themselves for a long time . They do not die.
They can be transformed into cells with special functions.
Adult stem cells
also called
Somatic stem cells
Undifferentiated cells found among differentiated cells in a tissue or organ
Undifferentiated
Not having specialized function
Differentiated
Having specified function
Embryonic stem cells
Undifferentiated No specific function So can be used to transform to any adult cell Can be grown rapidly in a lab Does not require a perfect match Harvested from cord blood
Hemopoietic
Blood forming tisssue in a bone marrow
