Med-Surg: Chapter 19: Type V Hypersensitivity: Stimulated Flashcards
1
Q
Type V Hypersensitivity
A
antibody-mediated cellular dysfunction
- leads to a change in cell function but does not lead to cell death as in type II
- there is an excessive stimulation of a normal cell-surface receptor by an autoantibody; results in a continuous turned-on state for the cell
ex: Graves’ Disease (a form of hyperthyroidism)
2
Q
Pathophysiology
A
an autoantibody binds to the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor sites on the thyroid gland
- the action of the binding results in a continual stimulation of thyroid cells to produce thyroid hormone
- the normal feedback system is no longer working to stop the overproduction of thyroid hormones
3
Q
Manifestations
A
- thyroid gland is normal
- manifestations that are exhibited are those of hyperthyroidism
4
Q
Example of Type V Hypersensitivity Reaction
A
Graves’ Disease
