Med-Surg: Chapter 19: Type V Hypersensitivity: Stimulated Flashcards

1
Q

Type V Hypersensitivity

A

antibody-mediated cellular dysfunction

  • leads to a change in cell function but does not lead to cell death as in type II
  • there is an excessive stimulation of a normal cell-surface receptor by an autoantibody; results in a continuous turned-on state for the cell
ex: Graves’ Disease (a form of hyperthyroidism)

Q

Pathophysiology

A

an autoantibody binds to the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor sites on the thyroid gland

  • the action of the binding results in a continual stimulation of thyroid cells to produce thyroid hormone
  • the normal feedback system is no longer working to stop the overproduction of thyroid hormones
