Chapter 22: Caring for the Child with Psychosocial or Cognitive Condition Flashcards
Vulnerability
those characteristics of a child that may predispose him to a disorder
-affected by genetics, temperament, environment, and exposure to threats of mental health
Resilience
child’s capacity to use adaptive and positive resources, internal and external, to cope with adversity
There is a belief that childhood is seen as?
a “sacred” happy time free of problems
Barriers to child and adolescent mental health
-some health-care providers dismiss or minimize parents concerns
-some parents may me told that the child is simply going through a stager that will pass, when there are grounds for concern; this may lead to several issues
>such as not getting screened on a timely basis for disordered behaviors and emotional difficulties can be attenuated or resolved if early intervention is sought out in a timely manner; having a sense of shame for the family if a child or adolescent is eventually diagnosed with a mental health problem that might have been prevented or attenuated earlier, and inability to receive adequate mental health or psychosocial treatment because of lack of resources
