Schizophrenia
A
mood disorder
- chronic mental health disorder
- thought to be the result of abnormalities in neurodevelopmental processes that occur early as well as later in life
- occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood; can be possible as young as 5 or 6 to exhibit signs

Signs + Symptoms
A
- hallucinations (hearing voices, seeing things, or experiencing strange sensations)
- delusions (false beliefs, e.g., beliefs that the radio is sending special messages)
- disorganized speech and behavior
- decreased or “flattening” of affect (visible expression of mood), speech, and motivation

Diagnosis
A
based on mental health interview; includes a comprehensive developmental and family history

Nursing Care
A
- Early treatment: pharmacological agents (e.g. atypical antipsychotics)
- adolescent and family psychoeducation, psychotherapy aimed at increasing level of functioning
- Acute treatment: (e.g. hallucinations, delusions, fearfulness, and acting out) consists of maintaining the safety of the child and others
- ongoing support to the family

Education/Discharge
A
- adolescent and family should always in stay in treatment for best outcome
- remind the importance of taking medications and side effects
- reinforce ongoing psychotherapy and support
