What is gynecology?
Study of diseases of women’s reproductive organs
What is obstetrics?
The care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and up to 42 days after expulsion of all pregnancy contents
What is the transport position for a woman >20wks and why?
Left lateral recumbent
Prevents compression of inferior vena cava (supine hypotension)
What is the 1st stage of labour?
Onset of regular contractions to full dilation of cervix
What is stage two of labour?
Full dilation to birth of baby
What is the 3rd stage of labour?
Delivery of the placenta?
What is uterine atony?
Uterus fails to contract after delivery
Can cause PPH
What signs and symptoms would query pre-eclampsia?
Symptom + 2 elevated BP readings (15 mins apart)
BP >140/90
What can be given for vomiting in pregnancy?
Cyclizine 50mg IM
How long is an umbilical cord?
≈50cm
What are the cord clamp distances?
20/15/10cm
Where is the cord clamped?
Between 20-15cm
AFTER 1 minute!!!!
What is considered a full term baby?
37-40wks
What is considered a pre-mature baby?
<37wks
What is considered a late birth?
> 42 weeks
What is a multiparous woman?
A woman who have given birth one of more times
What is the 5-1-1 rule?
Contractions every 5 minutes
Lasting 1 minute
For at least 1 hour
How do you remember gravida vs parity?
G -got it
P- pushed it
What is a mucus plug/bloody show?
Sits inside cervix during pregnancy to keep cervix closed
What is gestational diabetes?
Diabetes during pregnancy
What is parity?
The number of times a woman has given birth to a foetus with a gestational age of >24wks regardless of the outcome
What is the gestational time for the delivery of twins in Ireland?
37.1wks
How do you assess PV bleeding?
Volume/colour/consistency/location
If there is PV bleeding, when would you pre-alert the ED?
If there is:
- pain
- high/low BP
- shock
- low placenta
- shoulder tip pain
- SEPSIS
What is low placenta?
Placenta is attached lower in the uterus
What is another term for low placenta?
Placenta previa
