ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Flashcards
What is the function of the endocrine system
To release hormones into the blood while monitoring levels
PINEAL GLAND
Makes and releases melatonin
Regulates cicadium rhythm
Found: in brain
PITUITARY GLAND
Makes hormones and tells other endocrine system glands to release hormones
FUNCTION: growth/metabolism/reproduction/Cortisol/labor/birth/lactation
(Honestly this bitch does so much)
Thyroid gland
Hormones for metabolism
Butterfly shaped gland at front of neck
Parathyroid glands
Release parathyroid hormone - controls level of Ca+ in blood
(4 glands)
Adrenal glands
Adrenaline/noradrenaline
Where: top of kidneys
Hypothalamus
Links endocrine and nervous system
This bitch just wants to maintain homeostasis
Pancreas
Maintains BGL and aids food digestion
Above what ketone level is DKA considered
0.6
Polyuria
Frequent urination
Polydipsia
Frequent/excessive thirst
Polyphagia
Intense hunger
Kussmaul breathing
Rapid, deep breathing
Micturition
Discharge of urine from the bladder
What is Addison’s disease
AKA: primary adrenal insufficiency
Adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormone cortisol and aldosterone
What medication can be given for adrenal insufficiency
Hydrocortisone 100mg IM
Cystitis
Bladder infection
Pyelonephritis
Kidney infection
What is glycogenesis?
Formation of glycogen from sugar (can be stored to use later)
Glycogenolysis
Breakdown of glycogen into glucose
What is glycolysis
The breakdown of glucose
(It does stuff after it breaks down but that’s too complicated and confusing for a girl like me)
