Q

What body of water is shown here, and why was it significant?

A

Lake Agassiz was a massive glacial lake that existed in North America around 12,000 to 9,000 years ago.

It is significant in environmental history due to its profound impact on the climate, geography, and hydrology of the region.

When it drained, Lake Agassiz released an immense amount of freshwater into the oceans, especially the North Atlantic, which likely altered ocean currents, influenced global climate patterns, and may have contributed to the onset of the Younger Dryas—a sudden, brief return to glacial conditions.

Q

Explain what this map is showing

A

The Triangle Trade was a trading system during the 16th to 19th centuries that connected Europe, Africa, and the Americas in a three-part trade route. Here’s how it worked, in simple terms:

  • Europe to Africa: Ships from Europe carried goods like guns, textiles, and alcohol to Africa. These goods were traded for enslaved people.
  • Africa to the Americas (Middle Passage): The enslaved people were transported across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas under brutal conditions. Many did not survive the journey.
  • Americas to Europe: In the Americas, enslaved people were forced to work on plantations, producing goods like sugar, tobacco, and cotton. These goods were then shipped back to Europe, where they were sold for profit.

Each leg of this triangle added value and wealth for European traders, while causing immense suffering and exploitation, especially for enslaved Africans.
