Male Reproductive Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
2 inch long 1 inch wide, filled with seminiferous tubules
testis (es)
highly coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored. one end is attached to each testis.
epididymis
aka sperm duct, connected to epididymis and passes from scrotum through inguinal canal
vas deferens
skin-covered bag suspended from groin where sperm develop, 2 degrees lower than body temperature
scrotum
passageways connecting scrotal and abdominal cavities
inguinal canals
passes through penis to outside of body
urethra
passes through prostate gland and opens into urethra
ejaculatory duct
4 parts of penis
shaft; glans penis (tip); prepuce foreskin; cavernous bodies (3 bodies supplied with large blood vessels)
saclike glands which empty into each vas deferens. secrete mucus-like fluid to nourish sperm cells
seminal vesicles
surrounding urethra, secretes a thick milky alkaline secretion which neutralizes acidity of other sperm fluids.
prostate gland
found on each side of urethra, pea-sized. secrete a clear alkaline fluid to lubricate and prepare for ejaculation
bulbourethral glands (Cowper glands)
Primary sex characteristics (2)
growth of penis and scrotum; increased activity of internal reproductive structures
Secondary sex characteristics (4)
deepening of voice; muscle development; growth of facial/underarm/pubic hair; stimulation of oil glands in skin
