Liver pathology Flashcards

1
Q

What is a portal tract in the liver?

A

A portal triad (also known as portal canal, portal field, portal area, or portal tract) is a distinctive arrangement within lobules. It consists of the following five structures: one or two small bile ductules of cuboidal epithelium, branches of the bile conducting system.

Q

What are stellate cells?

A

Hepatic stellate cells (HSC), also known as perisinusoidal cells or Ito cells (earlier lipocytes or fat-storing cells), are pericytes found in the perisinusoidal space of the liver, also known as the space of Disse (a small area between the sinusoids and hepatocytes). The stellate cell is the major cell type involved in liver fibrosis, which is the formation of scar tissue in response to liver damage.

Q

What is a mallory denk body?

A

Mallory bodies (MB), also known as Mallory-Denk bodies (MDB), are cytoplasmic hyaline inclusions of hepatocytes, once thought to be specific for alcoholic hepatitis now occur in other liver diseases which include nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cholestatic liver diseases, primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). They contain ubiquitin or cytokeratin.

A

Q

What is the difference between acute and chronic hepatitis?

A

Chronic persistent hepatitis referred to portal inflammation without piecemeal necrosis (now called as interface hepatitis)

Acute can be more bridging
