Fungal infections and drugs Flashcards
What is amphotericin?
• Binds to ergosterol and forms pores in cell membrane
What is azoles?
• Inhibit ergosterol synthesis and damage fungal cell membrane
What is echinocandins?
Caspofungin, Anidulafungin, Micafungin
• Non-competitive inhibitors of 1,3-beta-D-glucan resulting in
reduced cell wall cross linking and weakened cell wall
What is Flucytosine?
Developed as potential tumour agent
• Interferes with DNA and protein synthesis
• Always used in combination treatment due to risk resistance
What is mucormycosis?
Caused by a variety of moulds in the order Mucorales
• Rhizopus, Mucor, Rhizomucor,
• Typically affects patients with haematological
malignancies, high dose steroids or DKA
• Devastating and aggressive rhino-orbital cerebral and
pulmonary infections
What are some dermatophytes?
Tinea pedis (athelete’s foot) • Tinea corpis (“Ring worm”) • Trichophyton spp • Treat with topical terbinafine, ketoconazole, clotrimazole
What is terbinafine?
Squalene epoxidase inhibition
