Where does the Liquid Radwaste TDS Tank vent to ?
Vents to Radwaste Building ventilation exhaust header
Where does the TDS Tank Overflow to ? What happens if all three TDS Tanks are overfilled
-TDS tanks overflow into one another
-If all three tanks are overflowing they’ll overflow into the Radwaste Building Sump
Where do the Liquid Radwaste Holdup Pumps discharge too ?
From the LRS RDS Hold up tanks to either LRS Evaporator or Radwaste Truck Bay
Where are the LRS TDS Holdup Pumps used for Recirculation?
-On nightly basis to prevent growth of micro-biologics in Tanks
-Prior to chemistry sampling & after chemical Additions
-Transfers water between LRS TDS Tanks
Where can the TDS Holdup Pumps take there suction from ?
All three LRS TDS Holdup Pumps can take suction from all three TDS Holdup Tank
What’re the power supplies to the TDS Holdup Pumps ?
They’re powered from 480VAC MCC
What automatic action will happen to Holdup Pumps when TDS Holdup Tank has a LO-LO level of 500gallons ?
LO-LO level in ANY TDS Holdup Tank will trip ALL Holdup Pumps & prevent all Holdup Pumps from being started
What is automatic functions does the ovation system provide for a LO-LO level in the TDS Holdup Tanks?
-Will ONLY trip the Holdup Pump that is aligned with the TDS Tank that has LO-LO level
-Other holdup pumps can start that are aligned to other TDS Tanks without LO-LO level
What are the Caustic Tank & Smaller Caustic Batch Tank used for ?
Caustic Tank- Used as storage tank for caustic used for PH adjustment of TDS Holdup Tank
Small Caustic Batch Tank- Used to provide the caustic to TDSHoldup Tank & prevents inadvertent drainage into the TDS HoldupTank
How is the Caustic Storage Tank filled ?
Tank is filled by Trailer Truck via fill connection on outside wall of Radwaste Building
When will the Caustic Tank fill valve automatically close ?
Will automatically close when Caustic Tank level reaches 40”
What is three way valve between the Caustic Tank & Small Caustic Batch Tank used for ?
-It’s used to gravity feed caustic from the Caustic Storage Tank to the Caustic Batch Tank
-Then the valve is realigned to supply Caustic from the Batch Tank to the TDS Tank
-Valve isn’t capable of Directly aligning Caustic Storage Tank to the TDS Tank
Where does the Caustic Storage Tank vent & overflow to ?
Vents & overflows to the neutralizing bed at 100ft at fill station
Why do the caustic piping have Heat Tracing & Caustic Tanks have heaters ?
Have heaters to prevent crystallization of NaOH
What is Anti-Foam used for ?
Anti-Foam agent minimizes bubbling & detergent foaming
Where is Anti Foam delivered to?
-LR Evaporator
-LRS TDS Holdup Tank(Never used)
How is the Anti-foam tank filled ?
Filled from portable tank via hand operated Fill pump & hose
Where is the Anti-Foam pump handswitch operated from ?
Provided panel in Radwaste Control Room
Where is Anti-Foam pump operated on the Ovation system ?
Will be controlled via Thin Client in Radwaste Control Room
What does the LR Evaporator do ?
-Concentrates & remove TDS
-Recover the water for reuse throughout plant
What does the Main Recycle Pump do? Where does it take suction from?
-Supplies 10,500gpm recirculation flow
-Takes suction from lower(liquid) portion Vapor Body & discharges to heating element
Where does the Heating Element get its heat source from ? What is it used for ?
Uses Aux. Steam to boil processed water from TDS Tanks for it to flash inside the Vapor Body
Where does the Aux. steam that gets condensed inside the heating element go ?
It goes to the Aux. Steam Condensate Receiver Tank
Where does Evaporator get its Feed from ?
Consists of feed from LRS TDS Holdup Tank
What kind of water goes through LP area of Vapor Body ?
Liquid waste enters & some flashes to steam & exits out the top
When liquid waste flashes to steam in the Vapor Body what does it pass through as it exits the top ?
-Steam passes through 3 reflux trays
-Passes through 3 mesh pads
What do the 3 reflux trays in Vapor Body do as steam passes through it ?
-Has spray nozzles that spray RMW that removes suspended dissolved solids from steam
What do the 3 mesh pads do inside the Vapor Body as the steam passes through it ? Where does removes moisture go ?
-Mesh pads remove contaminants & entrained moisture to prevent carryover
-Removed moisture falls down to Vapor Body for Recirc, while steam flows to condenser turns into reusable water
Where does the Evaporator Concentrate Pumps take there suction from ? Where do they discharge to ?
-Takes suction from Evap. Recycle line between Vapor Body & Main Recycle Pump
-Discharges concentrated liquid waste to Concentrate Monitor Tanks & density transmitter
What does the Surface Condenser do ? What cooling water is supplied to it ?
-Steam from Vapor Body is condensed by Surface Condenser
-Cooled by Nuclear Cooling Water
After vapor is condensed inside the Surface Condenser where does it fall to?
The condensed distillate falls into the reboiler
What does the Vent Cooler do ? What cooling water is sent through vent cooler ?
-Condenses any remaining Vapor coming from Surface Condenser to prevent water getting in Radwaste Building Exhaust
-Removes non-condensable gases via Radwaste Building Exhaust
-Nuclear Cooling Water
What is the reboiler used for ?
Improved distillate quality by removing volatile impurities by reheating it via Aux. Steam
What happens to the distillate as it falls through the column ?
Distillate is scrubbed as it falls through column by distillate vapor produced in Reboiler
Where does the degassed distillate collect ?
Collects in a seal pot at bottom of Reboiler
Where does the Aux Steam collects & drain to ?
-Collects at bottom of the Heating Element
-Drains to the Aux steam condensate receiver tank
Where do the Distillate Pumps take suction from ? Where does it discharge to ?
Take suction from Reboilers seal pot & discharges to either Distillate Cooler or back to Vapor Body based on reboiler level
How many Distillate Pumps are in service ?
One pump is normally in service & other is in standby
What does the Distillate Cooler do ?
-It cools distillate to 125F to prevent damage to Adsorption Bed & Mixed Bed Ion Exchanger resins
What is the Distillate Cooler cooled by?
Cooled by nuclear cooling water
After Distillate is cooled by Distillate Cooler where is it directed to ?
It’s directed to either Adsorption Bed & Mixed Bed Ion Exchanger for further processing or back to Vapor Body based on Conductivity
Where does the Steam Condensate Pump take suction from? Where does it discharge to ?
Pumps condensed Aux. Steam from Heating Element to the Aux. Steam Condensate Receiver Tank
What is the distillate level inside the Reboiler maintained at ?
Normally maintained at 65%-75%
What supply valve shouldn’t be opened to prevent Reboiler tube damage ?
-Aux. steam supply valve shall not be opened until level indication is above 60% inside Reboiler
What needs to be done to prevent reboiler tube damage the stripper steam valve ?
Aux. Steam is opened no more than 25%
What’re the Adsorption Beds used for ?
Uses charcoal to contain total organic compound control
What’re the Ion Exchangers downstream of the Adsorption Bed used for ??
Remove any trace ionic radioisotopes & chemical in solution through cation & anion exchange
What happens to the exhausted resin & where is it sent to ?
It’s sliced to the Solid Radwaste system Spent Resin Storage Tanks for disposal
How is the Ion Exchangers normally aligned ?
They’re aligned in series, but could be aligned in parallel
What do the Recycle Monitor Tanks store ?
Accepts & stores processed liquid Radwaste from LRS Evaporator via Adsorption bed & Mixed Bed Ion Exchanger
What is the Recycle Monitor takes provide water to ?
-SFP Makeup
-RCS Makeup
-Ion Exchanger Resin sluicing
-Condensate makeup(not used)
Where do the Recycle Monitor Tank accept processed liquid Radwaste ?
Receives from LRS Evaporator via Adsorption Bed & Mixed Bed Ion Exchanger
What’re the Recycle Monitor Tanks alarms ?

Why don’t the Recycle Monitor Tanks supply makeup water to RMWT & Condensate Storage Tank Makeup ?
There is tritium in the water and water is supposed to be clean water going to those tanks
Where does the Recycle Monitor Tanks overflow to ?
They over flow to each other & if both tanks are full, then it’ll overflow into the Radwaste Sump
What happens when Recycle Monitor Tanks hasn’t been sampled or isn’t acceptable for reuse ?
It it routed back to LRS TDS Holdup Tanks
What is the Recycle Monitor Pump Powered from ?
It’s powered from 480VAC MCC
What conditions will trip the Recycle Monitor Pumps ?
-LO-LO Recycle Monitor Tank from either tank
-HI-HI Pump Discharge
Where is the Recycle Monitor Pump operated from?
Three position control switch provided in Radwaste Control Room
What’re the Concentrator Monitoring subsystem used for?
-Provided holdup & monitoring processed from LRS Evaporator

What is the normal line up for the Concentrate Monitor Tanks ?
-One tank is normally aligned to collect waste
-Other tank is isolated for sampling & waste disposal

What happens when Concentrate Monitor Tanks overflow ?
They overflow into each other & if both are filled will overflow into Radwaste Building Sump

Yes to maintain temperature where concentrate would solidify
What conditions will automatically trip a running Concentrate Monitor Pump?
-LO-LO level in lines-up Concentrate Monitor Tank
-Low Pump suction pressure
When starting a Concentrate Monitor Pump, what else is gonna receive a start signal ?
The pumps seal water supply valve will open when start signal is received
Where is Concentrate Monitor Pump started from ?
-Three position hand switch provided on panel in Radwaste Control Room for each Concentrate Monitor Pump
What does Chemical Drain collect?
Collects from detergent & chemical wastes from Chemical Lab sinks & Decon & Laundry Facility for storage & disposal
What is the normal operation of the two Chemical Drain Tanks ?
-One tank is used for collection, while other tank is used for sampling & processing contents of other tank
Where do the Chemical Drain Tanks vent to ?
They vent to the Aux. Building Ventilation exhaust header
What happens when Chemical Drain Tanks overflow ?
They overflow into each other & if both get full it’ll overflow into Radwaste Building Sump
When will the Unit 1 Laundry & Decon. Facility Sump pump start ? Once started where does it discharge to ?
-Sump pump starts when the Sump reaches a HI level setpoint
-Discharges to Chemical Drain Tank
When the Unit 1 Laundry & Decon. Facility Sump Pump starts, why do you need to pay attention to the Chemical Drain Tank level ? When should the in service Chemical Drain Tank be swapped ?
-Must be aware when sump pump starts, monitor level of in service Chemical Drain Tank so it doesn’t overflow
-Swap Chemical Drain Tanks when in service one reaches 1000gallons
Where do the Chemical Drain Pumps draw suction from? Where do they discharge to ?

What does a single Control Cabinet for Liquid Radwaste system consist of ?
-Drop 40/90
-Two full branches of I/O Modules
-One Remote Node Controller Cabinet with more I/O Modules
How will a loss of the Liquid Radwaste system impact the plant ?
If it’s unavailable,exceeded capacity, or is lost then TDS Holdup Tanks water will be transported to other unit for processing
How do LR system interface with NG?
NG provides power to LRS Evaporator MCC
How does LR system interface with NH system ?
NH provides power to pumps & control panels
How does LR system interface with NK?
NK provides control power to Radwaste Control Room Panels
How does LR system interface with Solid Radwaste system ?
-LR wastes are sent to SR system for packaging & shipment offsite
-LR Recycle Monitor Tank can also supply suction for Resin Transfer Dewatering Pump
-After spent resin transfer, SR system sluice water can be sent to TDS Holdup Tank
How does LR system interface with Condensate Transfer & Storage ?
Recycle Monitor Tank can send reusable water to CST Tank (Not Normally Used )
How does LR system interface with SFP ?
Recycle Monitor Tanks send water to SFP for makeup water
How does LR system interface with Radioactive Waste Drains ?
-LR equip. Drains & leakage collects in Radwaste Building Sump
-LR receives waste from all building that could potentially have radioactive particles
How does LR system interface with Radwaste Building HVAC(HR) ?
-TDS Tanks, Concentrate Monitor Tanks, & Evaporator vent to HR
-HR also provides cooling for LR components
