lecture 9 Flashcards
alveolar process/margin of the maxilla
o The region housing the sockets of the upper teeth
anterior nasal spine
o Is located anteriorly just below the nasal openings
Supports tu nasal tip, determines face morphology, attachment site for cartilage
infraorbital foramen
o A hole directly below the eye orbit that carries nerves to the face
palatine process
o Reaches towards the mouth, makes the anterior (top) part of the mouth
Forms the hard palate, supports the nasal cavity, provides structural support, forms the nasal crest, forms the floor of the nose
incisive fossa
o An opening on the roof of the mouth, is right behind the incisors or front teeth
temporal process
o The bottom protruding back portion of the zygomatic bone
lacrimal bone
o A tiny fragile bone that makes the tear ducts
Supports the structures which secrete tears, a supports the eye
lacrimal fossa/groove
o It runs up and down along the length, and helps with tear ducts
horizontal plate of the palatine bone
o Makes up the back of the hard plate of the mouth
perpendicular plate of the palatine bone
o Runs up and down along the sides of the nasal openings
Assists in forming the septum of the nose
vomer
- A V-shaped bone that is divided into halves and separates the nasal septum and makes the inferior portion
inferior nasal conchae
- Is conche shell shaped. Swirls into the nasal cavity from the outside in and is on both sides. Is what bringing in air and warms it up for our body.
mental protuberance
o The mental region, or your chin region. The chin which sticks out on the lower jaw.
the mandibular ramus
o The projecting arm of bone that goes up toward the skull. Reaches superiorly up to the bone
Helps create the TMJ & allows movement
mandibular condyle
o The posterior extension from the ramus that connects with the temporal bone
Responsible for articulation, movement, stabilization, TMJ function
