Lecture 38: Musculoskeletal I Flashcards
two main types of joints
fibrocartilaginous
synovial (diarthrosis)
fibrous joint types
suture gomphosis syndemosis schindylesis (synathrosis)
cartilaginous joint types
symphesis
synchondrosis
(amphiarthrosis)
where are suture joints found
human skull
gomphosis explanation and example
something in a socket connected by ligaments with very little movement (ex: teeth)
syndemosis
fibrous connection between bones with no capsules or movement
(ex: tibio-fibular)
schindylesis
bone wedged into groove (happens in mouth)
synchondrosis explanation and where they are found
joint with bone, then cartilage, then bone. ONLY found in bottom of skull and long bones
what kind of joints often ossify
synchondrosis
symphysis example
intervertebral discs
why do humans have economy of energy
we rely on our ligaments, not our muscles, to keep us erect
what way can we rotate our knee
medial to lateral but not lateral to medial or you tear the ligament
what supports the arches of the foot
tibialis posterior
why would you let go if you are hanging from a cliff
eventually afferent fibers will put you in so much pain that you let go to save your ligaments (body works VERY hard to preserve these)
where do long bones grow from
epiphyseal plate (cartilage underneath turns into bone)
