Lecture 30: Perceptions of and functional challenges associated w/ aging Flashcards
this is anything that can be preventable not just the absence of disease
aging does not = disability
theroies of aging
which theory states:
* Age releated changes at the celllular level
* Cellular stress from free radicals
* Neuroendocrine or hormonal changes from stresses
* Chronic low grade systemic inflammation associated w/ aging
Developmental-Genetic-Fundamentalist
Which theory states
* Environmental damage to the DNA of the cell (ex radiation)
* Lack of sleep
* Hormonal imbalance
* Cellular mechanics
Non-genetic environmental
chronicological age = days since birth
physiological age: based on extrinisic and intrinsic variables (think low socioeconomic status / bad nutrition etc…)
decrease in brain size w/ age. this increases w/ alzhimers / dementia
ventricles enlarge w/ age
memory is slowed w/ age but not lost (w/ normal aging)
