“Play of often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning, but for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
KNOW: There are 6 stages of social play
The children does not seem to be playing. Watches anything of momentary interest

The child plays with toys that are different from those used by other children and makes no effort to be near or play with the other children

The child watches other children playing, but does not enter into play

The child plays with the same or similar toys as a nearby child, however plays independently, and not in the same way. The children do not try and infuluence each other

Parallel

The child plays w/ other children. No division of labor and no organized goal. Children act as they wish

Associative
* 3-4
Children play in a group organized for a goal. There may be a division of labor with different roles towards the same goal
* age
Cooperative or organized supplementary

Any Simple, repetitive movement with or without objects (type of cognitive play)
Functional
Manipulation of objects to construct or create something (type of cognitive play)
Constructive
Pretending to be something or someone or substitution of imaginary situation (types of cognitive play)
Imaginative
Any activity w/ rules, structures, and a goal (types of cognitive play)
