Lecture 10: Motor Development Month 7-9 Flashcards
When do babies start dropping their toys then looking at you
month 7
they have cause and affect at this point
NOTE: Big variety of what babies can you do at 7 months
* Some can walk at this point and others cant even sit
Is supine the babies perfurred positino at 7 months?
No
they want to roll out of this position and play at this point
* most want to be prone on elbows to play at this point
when do babies have the ability to be prone on elbows w/ full hd control?
4 months
when do babies get prone on extended arms?
5 months
At what month can baby be in prone and able to play with toy in one hand while weight bearing on other?
Month 7
At what month can the baby sit indepdently and use hands to manipulate toys?
Month 7
Makes sense, can sit at month 6, and they lose that palmar grasp reflex by month 7, so can manipuate external objects.
When does the beginning of lumbar lordosis start>
at month 7 the baby has increasing spinal extension and beginning of lumbar lordosis
Can baby pull to sit at 7 months?
Should be able to do this easily
Should have full control
Active head/neck flexion and contraction of abdominals
No head lag
(should’ve been able to do most of this at month 6)
A baby can first get into qaudruped at what month?
* At what month should they be able to easily transition in/out of quadruped?
6 months is when they obtain it
7 months in when they are able to transition in and out
* Able to weight shift forward/baclwards
once they start rocking back and forth in quadruped you need to have baby proofed because they’re about to creep / crawl
When does Bear Stand/Plantigrade
Month 7
Makes sense, they do quadruped at month 6 and can move in it at month 7
* So they essentially push from quadruped to plantigrade
Moving forward or backwards in quadruped position using reciprocal UE’s and/or LE
Creeping
Prone on stomach with stomach on floor
Crawling
think comado crawling
* to calrify for insurance document creeping in quadruped or crawling in prone
What do babies start w/ first crawling or creeping?
Can do either or skip
Don’t really want to skip because it helps develop hand strength
When does pull to stand
Month 7
typically in quadruped next to a support surface and extend their legs to stand up
normally cant get themselves back down to sitting
When can a baby maintain standing with UE or trunk support
* meaning they’re using their upper extremities to hold themselves up or someone else is supporting them
month 7
NOTE: at 7 months the pelvis remains posterior to shoulder in standing
At 7 months the baby may attempt to walk with a steppage giat forward in supported standing
What is a steppage gait?
Shuffling steps
KNOW: At this time the baby may stand up in the middle of the nightm but they’re unable to lower to sit with control so they just stand there and scream
What is cruising?
* when does it start
Side stepping holding onto furniture
KNOW: starts rigid
* Abductors and wobbles
* weight shift to left and abduct right
* not kicking leg up and stepping
Starts at 7 months
KNOW: 8 month old hates supine
* once they can get in quadruped / standing sitting, anything that puts them upright
KNOW: Whenever you’re learning a new skill you start w/ a wide BOS (more stable) then as you get more competent it gets narrower
When does baby start to use long sitting-experimenting w/ LE positions?
* What is still the most stable sitting position?
Month 8 (but most of the sitting positions change later)
Ring sitting remains most stable
Begins to side sit through transitional movements
At 8 months they show protective extension at what direction?
Forward/lateral
extension comes at 10
KNOW: at month 8 pull to stand with increasing use of LE’s however, mostly an UE task
* Symmetrical LE use to pull to stand
* Able to stand w/ single UE support
