Lecture 2 Movement Flashcards
What is physiology?
The study of function
What is gross anatomy?
Gross anatomy is the study of macro anatomy
what is the atomical position?
Standing upright, parallel on the floor, head level and looking forward, arms at side, palms facing up and thumbs away from body
What is degree are the body segments at?
0 degrees
Axial skeleton
Head, neck, trunk, vertebrate column, thoracic cage
Appendicular skeleton
upper and lower limbs
What are the different body cavities?
Cranial, thoracic, abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity
What does the cranial cavity house?
Houses brain (skull)
What does the thoracic cavity house?
Heart and lungs
What does the abdominal cavity house?
digestive viscera
what does the pelvic cavity house
urinary bladder, reproductive organs and rectum
define proximal
closer to the origin
Define distal
further away
Superior?
(cranial) near head
Inferior?
(caudal) away from head to tail
Uni lateral?
One side only
Bilateral
Both sides
ipsilateral
same side of body
contralateral
different sides
What is the sagittal plane?
divides the body into left and right, forward and backward of the body occur, on coronal axis
(dorsiflextion): up
(Plantar flexion): down
What is the coronal plane?
The coronal plane on the sagittal axis divides the body into front and back: anterior and posterior parts - lateral body movements
i. e.
1) abduction
2) adduction
3) inversion
4) eversion
5) lateral flexion
Define abduction?
Away -
Adduction
bring back +
What is the transverse plane?
divides the body into superior and inferior portions (horizontal movements occur when the body in the anatomical position) on the longitudinal axis
i.e. supination, pronation, medial and lateral rotation
Supine?
The body is facing up
Prone position?
the body is facing down
Flexion?
Bring closer to body (fetal position)
Extension
Away from the body
