Language of Medicine - Chapter 9 Flashcards
Male Reproductive System
define spermatozoon
sperm cell
define male sex cell
sperm
define male gonad
testes
what is the difference between fraternal twins and identical twins
fraternal twins = twins result from the fertilization of separate ova by sperm cells, the develop with separate placentas (can be different sex)
identical twins = result from the fertilization of a single egg, most share the same placenta and two amniotic sacs (has to be same sex because all DNA is the same)
what is the male hormone released?
testosterone - responsible for production of bodily characteristics
define scrotum
a sac enclosing the testes on the outside of the body
define seminiferous tubules
contain cells that manufacture spermatozoa
define parenchymal tissue
perform essential work of the organ (formation of sperm)
define epididymis
upper part of each testes
define vas deferens / ductus deferens
tube that carries the sperm up the pelvic region
define seminal vesicle
merges with urinary bladder
define vasectomy / sterilization
procedure where urologist cuts and ties off each vas deferens by making an incision in the scrotum
define urethra
secrete a thick, sugary, yellowish, substance that nourishes the sperm
define semen
combination of fluid (seminal fluid) + spermatozoa (sperm cells)
define prostate gland
lies at the region where vas deferens enters the urethra encircling the upper end of urethra
define bulbourethral glands
lie below the prostate and secrete fluid into urethra during ejaculation
define penis
urethra passes through penis to outside of body
define glans penis
tip of penis that is soft + sensitive
define prepuce + foreskin
fold of skin that covers the glans penis
