lab final Flashcards
nasal culture
looking for staph aur.
plate to bap and msa
–> if hemolytic: gram stain, catalase, slide coagulase, cefoxitin disc test
final reporting nasal
no growth = no growth
growth but no fermentation on msa = culture negative for staphylococcus aureus
staph present= all tests positive and msa fermentation
not mrsa: methicillin sensitive staphylococcus aureus
mrsa: methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus
throat culture
looking for streptocuccus
plate on bap
–> if beta hemolytic: gram stain, catalase, bacitracin
final reporting throat
no beta hemolytic: culture negative for streptococcus species group
gram +, catalase -, bacitracin sensitive: streptococcus species group a isolated
sputum culture
either streptococcus pneumoniae isolated or viridans streptococcus isolated
alpha hemolytic colonies
–> run gram stain, catalase, optochin
final reporting sputum
strep. pneumoniae: gram+, catalase -, optochin sensitive
viridans strep: gram+, catalase - , optochin resistant
