Pathology is the study of the causes and effects of diseases- encompasses all dental/oral related diseases
Why is pathology important?
-Make correct diagnosis
-give correct treatment
-understand systematic diseases
-make appropriate referrals
-advise and educate patients
What is aetiology?
The causes ,set of causes, or manner of causation of a disease or condition
What is morphology?
The phenotypic changes associated with the disease
What is pathogenesis?
Progressive diseases as disease develops
What is sequalae?
What happens next? After disease develops
Describe Dental caries, eg
Aetiology- Bacterial origin
Morphology- tooth decay
pathogenesis-fermentation of sugars
sequelae- fluoride treatment, remove infected tissue
Describe Oral cancer, eg
Aetiology- Excessive alcohol/smoking
Morphology- Carcinoma formation
pathogenesis-hyperplasia, dysplasia
Sequelae- Surgery
Why is it important to know about other body diseases?
They are linked with oral diseases/symptoms
What are some diseases related to periodontitis?
Diabetes
Stroke
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Alzheimer’s
What does the term ‘surgical sieve’ mean?
Differential diagnosis in which the clinician must diagnosis symptoms of a particular disease or condition from others that present similar clinical features.
