Bones and joints Flashcards
What type of cartilage is found at the ends of bone?
Articular cartilage
What are the 2 types of bone?
Cancellous bone (spongy) , Compact bone
What are the two types of bone marrow?
Red and yellow
What is the function of synovial joints?
Allows for extensive movement, smooth cartilage, synovial fluid in a capsule
What is the function of fibrous joints?
No synovial cavity
Joint held together by dense connective tissue
ie. skull
What is the function of cartilaginous joints?
No synovium, little movement held together by cartilage
ie. Pelvis
What is the function of ligaments?
Provide strength and tensile, holds everything together
What makes up the articular capsule?
Fibrous capsule and synovial membrane
When does the anterior fontanelle usually close?
between 9-18 months
When does the posterior fontanelle usually close?
1-2 months , may be closed at brith
What is a syndesmosis?
Fibrous joint between two bones and linked by ligaments and a strong membrane
What is a synchondrosis?
Type of cartilaginous joint where hyaline cartilage completely joins together two bones.
What is a symphysis?
Secondary cartilaginous joint, bone ends covered in hyaline cartilage, disc of fibrocartilage in between.
e.g. Pelvis
What vessels may rupture if there is trauma at the pterion?
Middle meningeal blood vessels (extra-Dural haemorrhage)
What is the pterion?
Weakest point of the skull, where the temporal, sphenoid, parietal and frontal bones meet
