What is endodontics?
The study of the clinical sciences of normal dental pulp
What is dental pulp?
Unmineralized tissue composes of soft connective tissue, vascular, lymphatic and nervous elements that occupies the central pulp cavity of each tooth
What is apical disease?
Apical periodontitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory lesion around the apex of a tooth root, which is caused by bacterial invasion of the pulp of the tooth
What is tooth decay?
Destruction of dental hard tissue by acid produced by bacteria utilising dietary sugar. (and time)
What happens when the pulp gets inflamed?
Toothache
What does malaise mean?
Feeling uncomfortable, ill or lack of energy but you cannot explain the cause.
What is cellulitis?
A serious bacterial infection of the skin.
What is a dental abscess?
A localized collection of pus that forms inside the
teeth or gums which essentially initiate from bacterial infection
What does trismus mean?
Can’t open mouth properly
How do radicular cysts arise?
From cell rests of mallassez, in the periodontal ligament usually in response to inflammation after pulp death
What are causes of endodontic disease?
Tooth decay
Trauma
Periodontal disease
Iatrogenic damage
What is iatrogenic damage?
Damage caused by medical professionals or medications
What are treatment options for endodontic disease?
- Root canal treatment
- Root canal re treatment
- Peri radicular surgery
- Extraction
- Incision and drainage
