Introduction to Parasites Flashcards
What is a parasite
an organism that lives in another organism (host) and gets its food at the expense of the host
Protozoa
Coccidia (Malaria) Amoebae Flagellates Cilates Microsporidia
Helminths (worms)
Roundworms
Tapeworms
Flatworms
Arthropods
Lice
Ticks
Mites
Plasmodium species of malaria
P. falciparum
Symptoms of malaria
fever, chills and flu-like symptoms
Vector for malaria
Mosquito (Anopheles)
Stages of infection in malaria
- Spoirozoites injected under skin
- travel through blood to liver
- Mature and enter circulation as merozoites
- Invade red cells, multiply and lyse and reinvade more cells
- Gametocytes are taken up mosquitos
Thin Blood Smear
Fixed in methanol and allows identification of species and quantification
Thick Blood Smear
Increased sensitivity but limited parasite morphology. Not fixed in methanol
Malaria control
Insecticide, mosquito nets, prophylaxis
Amoebic Dysentry
Diarrhoea with blood
Trophozoites ingest red cells by throwing out pseudopodia
Entamoeba histolytica
Detection of amoebea infection
Microscopy of cysts found in stools
Leishmaniasis species
Flagellate
What does it cause and Where is Leishmaniasis found
Skin or mucosal ulceration. Can be cutaneous or muco-cutaneous
Cause of Leishmaniasis infections
Sandflies- black fever
Nematodes
Round worms
Cestodes
Tape worm
Trematodes
Flat worms
Nematodes Species and Features
Enterobius (pin worm)- found in children
Ascaris lumbricodes- Loeffler’s syndrome- respiratory illness caused by accumulation of eosinophils
Cestodes Species and Features
Taenia saginata- beef
Taenia solium - pork and causes Cysticercosis through ingestion of eggs
Echinococcus- carried by animals and form hyatid cysts in liver
Trematodes Species and Features
Schistosomiasis S. haematobium (bladder) S. mansoni (intestinal) S. japomicum (intestinal) penetrate body of snail --> Carcaria emerge from snails --> penetrate human skin---Lungs to liver- lay eggs in bladder and mesentry = Katayma fever
Katyama Fever
Schistosomiasis (Flat worm)
Carcaria emerge from snails
Schistosomiasis (Flat worm)
S. haematobium (bladder)
S. mansoni (intestinal)
S. japomicum (intestinal)
Schistosomiasis (Flat worm)
Elevated eosinophilia and elevated levels of IgE
Helminth infection (worm)
Diagnosis of parasite infection
Microscopy
Blood films
Serology
