what is a risk factor and list the types
risk factors are stuff that increase a pt’s likelihood of developing a disease or altered health condition; there’s modifiable or nonmodifiable risk factors
primary prevention and examples
decrease risk for developing medical conditions
ex: vaccinations, stop smoking, wear seatbelt, safe sex
secondary prevention and examples
early screening to detect a disease before it has complications
ex: bp, cancer screening, Pap smear
tertiary prevention and examples
control chronic illness and restore to optimal function
ex: physical therapy, diet choice for diabetes, support groups
quaternary prevention and examples
protect client from excessive use of medical interventions that can cause more harm than good
