Understand how participating in physical activity/or sport can positively impact on an individuals physical, social and mental well being.
Health benefits
Sport England want more people to participate in sport so less people will suffer from diseases which could be prevented if more people were physically active.
How can physical activity help and individual to stay healthy?
1 - Decreased risk of developing heart disease/suffering a stroke.
2 - Avoidance of high/low blood pressure.
3 - Decreased risk of type 2 diabetes.
4 - Maintaining a healthy weight/decreased risk of obesity.
5 - Strengthening of bones and decreased risk of osteoporosis.
6 - Improved psychological/mental health and stress management; decreased risk of conditions such as anxiety/depression/emotional disturbance.
7 - Decreased risk of some cancers (e.g. colon cancer and breast cancer)
What are the physical benefits of exercise?
1 - Improved posture/ body shape/ body tone as a result of weight loss.
2 - Improved cardiovascular fitness/ muscular strength/ muscular endurance.
3 - Improved flexibility/agility/balance/co-ordination.
4 - Improved speed/power/reaction.
5 - Continuous activités, improve stamina/endurance.
What are the mental benefits?
1 - Exercise causes the body to release chemicals such as serotonin and endorphins, which have a calming effect and help a person to feel happier/better about themselves. More positive outlook on life.
2 - Improved sleep patterns result from participation in regular exercise, which can enhance a person’s mood and their relationships.
3 - The boost in a person’s mood can also help improve skills of concentration, which allows a clear focus on social relationships.
What are the social benefits of social benefits?
1 - As an individuals’s social snd emotional health improves, confidence and self-esteem are likely to increase, and involvement in sport/exercise classes becomes increasingly likely.
