What is meant by talent identification?
The multi-disciplinary screening of athletes in order to identify with these worth the potential for world class success.
What are the 3 organisations providing support, progression from talent ID through to elite performance?
1 - UK Sport
2 - English institute of sport
3 - National Governing Bodies.
How does UK Sport support athletes to elite performance?
1 - Focus on developing high performance sport in the Uk.
2 - Their work is aimed at developing and implementing various strategies to increase sporting excellence in this country.
3 - Primary role is to strategically invest and distribute National Lottery funding for elite performer development in order to maximise the performance of the UK athletes.
4 - They provide funding to NGB’s which enables them to operate a World Class Programme covering all funded summer and winter Olympic/Paralympic sports.
5 - They also contribute to the athletes living and sporting costs once they have reached elite performance level.
6 - UK Sport is a lead agency involved in running Talent ID programmes with the EIS providing host venues Promotes positive sporting conduct and ethnics at elite in the UK’s high performance athletes.
How does the national institute of sport support athletes?
S - Sports science and medical service. Generates its own income by providing services to NGB’s such as performance analysis, sports medicine. Their job is to increase the probability of a potential athlete being successful by providing a range of different services to improve their health, fitness, training and preparation.
P - Performance lifestyle support - Reduces the distractions and concerns, athletes may face - e.g, budgets, time management, dealing with mead etc…
O - Organisations work in partnership EIS operates ‘World Class Performance’ environments via nine ‘High Performance’ centres as well as numerous other training bases across England.
R - Research and innovation staff providing top athletes with best equipment and technology.
T - Top quality facilities and high level coaches are provided. Its staff work with high level coaches and NGB performances directors to help improve the performance of their best athletes, by delivering a range of services to enable them to optimise training programmes and maximise performance.
How does National Governing Bodies support athletes?

Help ensure the developement of elite performers in a number of different ways, they can promote and increase participation by providing opportunities to all. This can be done by:
- Positive roles models used to promote sport and target groups
- Accesible facilities provided and developed for groups with a particular need
- Meet government policies on sport and recreation
- Policies put in place to target certain underrepresented groups
- Employments of sport specific Sport Development Officers to promote the sport to under represented groups
- Resources invested in inner city areas.
Use regional scouts and talent identification schemes to try and identify young sporting talent. Work with other organisations such as National Institutes of Sport to provide elite performers with various support services necessary to help them develop and progress.
Provide sports specific coaching awards for basic, low level qualifications through to the high level necessary to support elite performers.
What is meant by whole sport plan?
WHOLE SPORT PLAN - Lottery funded - purpose is to; increase participation, identify and develop talent e.g, domestic competitions.
Business plan/document submitted to sport England outlining national governing body strategies to increase participation and enhance talent in the sport or sports for which they are responsible.

What are benefits of talent identification programs?

What are some of the disadvantages of the talent identification programmes?

5 - Many sports are in competition for the same talent pool; high-profile sports may attract more performers or the best performers.
