Q

Development of elite performers in sport essay

A

Firstly, Talent identification programs are vital so that the UK is able to find future stars who can compete in things such as the Olympics and Paralympics. There are three organisations which help with make a quality identification program and these include, national governing bodies, UK Sport and the National institute sport organisation. One characteristic that makes a good talent identification program is that they give all sports athletes an opportunity to be screened. Consequently, these performers can get accurate testing scores which will show coaches and professionals that they are exceptional in certain areas. As a result, they will be able to identify a certain sport applicable for the performer to allow them to have the chance at competing for a medal in the future. However, some people may take a lot longer to improve and may not be ready to compete for a medal straight away. Therefore, there is something known as the world class performance program. This is whereby, the program covers all funded summer and winter olympic and Paralympic sports. The program also features two different pathways to which are known as the podium pathway and the podium potential pathway. The podium pathway is where the individual is almost fast tacked to competing at the closest international tournament due to the professionals seeing immediate potential and therefore, believe they can win a medal. Consequently, this means that usually the maximum amount of time on this program would be 4 years or shorter depending on when the next international competition is. Similarly, the podium potential pathway also means the individual will be able to compete but they believe that the person needs more time. Therefore, they will not compete in the closest competition due to them not being ready. As a result, they will go through different stages of training with professional coaches to allow them to reach their potential. The maximum time on this program is usually up to 8 years as they should be ready by then. As I had previously mentioned there are three organisations which help with funding to support these individuals in their training. Firstly UK Sport themselves are funded by the national lottery meaning they have the ability to pump In lots of money annually to support the athletes. They roughly put In 100 million each year. UK Sport then provides funding to the NGB’s which enables them to operate a World Class Program covering all funded summer and winter Olympic and Paralympic sports. As well as this UK sport also help with the performers living and sporting costs once they have reached the elite performance level which could take time. Although there are many positives there are also some negatives. One negative of the Elite development program is that they may miss late developers. This is because, although people are in the same sporting age group some of the older players born in earlier months would have developed a lot quicker. As a result, the younger players may be left behind as they have not been given as much time.
