Cardiovascular system Flashcards
What is the respiratory system?
Transport oxygen around the body and is the delivery of air from the environment to our lungs so it can be transported around our body.
What are the components of the respiratory system?
mouth or nose
Trachea
Bronchi (splits in two parts)
Bronchioles (Splits in smaller tubes)
Alveoli (Gaseous exchange takes place)
What is gas exchange?
Passing of oxygen from the alveoli into the blood flow and excess co2 within the blood passing back into the alveoli to be breathed out.
How does the process of inspiration work?
Volume of the chest or thoracic must increase
This occurs because the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm contract
Rib cage moves up and out the diaphragm flattens to increase the space.
(One more step)
Process of expiration
End of the breath, intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax
Returning to their starting position, which decreases the size of the thoracic cavity.
Decreased space and increased air pressure in the lungs and forces air out.
