What is meant by amateurism?
Participation in sport for the love of it, receiving no financial gain, it is based on the concept of athleticism (a devotion to sport with high levels of physical endeavour and moral integrity.
What are the key components that need to be taken into consideration with amateurism?

4 - Integrity
Who is the founder of the modern Olympic Games and the modern olympic oath?
Baron Pierre de Coubertin
First taken in the 1920 summer Olympics (the oath).
Who would receive the Olympic Oath?
A promise made by one athlete as a representative of the participating competitors. One judge as a representative of the olympic officials who commit in particiular, at the opening ceremony of each olympics and one coach.
What did the athletes read?
” In the name of all competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of the sport and honour of our teams”
Why did ben Johnson lose his medals.
There has been an increase in the amount of drug testing due to ben Johnson in 1988. This is because, he had a win at all cost mentality but by doing so took anabolic steroids and broke the Olympic Oath while not adhering to the rules and regulations.
London 2012 Olympic Games - what happened with the badminton players?
8 badminton players were excluded in the London 2012 Olympics games due to them purposefully losing their games to get easier matches in the future.
What is meant by the term sportsmanship?
Conforming to rules and the etiquette of the sport.
The sportsmanship model is built on the idea that sport both demonstrates and encourages character development, which then influences the moral character and the broader community. How we each compete in sports can have an effect on our personal moral and ethical behaviour outside of the competition.
What are the 4 virtues that are required with ethics in sport?
1 - Fairness
2 - Integrity
3 - Responsibility
4 - Respect
What is Fairness?
All athletes and coaches must follow established rules
Teams that seek an unfair competitive advantage over their opponent create an uneven playing field.
What is integrity?
Athlete who seeks to gain an advantage over his or her opponent by means of a skill that the game itself was not designed to test demonstrates a lack of personal integrity and violates the integrity of the game.
What is responsibility?
To be sportsmanlike requires players and coaches to take responsibility for their performance, as well as their actions on the field. This includes their emotions.
What is respect?
All athletes should show respect for teammates, opponents, coaches and officials.
All coaches should show respect for their players, opponents, and officials.
