Define Inter-Regional Flows
Occurs between countries which are not located in the same region of the world - between continents
Define Intra-Regional Flows
Occurs between countries in the same region of the world - within a continent
Define International Migrant
Someone who moves from one country to another to establish a new permanent place of residence
What three things does Lee’s Model of Migration consist of?
Push factors, Pull factors, Intervening obstacles
Define Push Factors
Cause a migrant to want to move from their country of origin e.g. war
Define Pull Factors
Attract a migrant to a destination e.g. better job opportunities, good housing and welfare services, personal safety
Define Intervening Obstacles
Involves a human barrier to overcome e.g. transport issues or a physical barrier to overcome e.g. mountains
What is a push factor for Mexican migrants?
High crime rates - e.g. in the past 5 years 47,500 people have been killed in crimes related to drugs
What is a pull factor for Mexican migrants traveling to the USA?
Better academic opportunities in the US - majority of students leave school at 16 in USA rather than 14 in Mexico
Define Bilateral Migrant Corridor
Established flows of people between countries e.g. the largest is between Mexico and USA
What are the five reasons migration has become complex?
Conflict and persecution has increased the number of forced migrants, Economic globalisation and the emergence of new source areas and host destinations, The number of young workers and female migrants is increasing, Changes in national immigration and emigration policies, Migration flows in south: south corridors is increasing
Define Internally Displaced Person (IDP)
Someone who is forced to flee their homes but remain in their own country
Define Asylum Seeker
Someone who is trying to get refugee status in the host country, but whose claim has not yet been assessed. If their claim is unsuccessful they will have to return to their country of origin
Define Refugee
Someone who has sought asylum and has been assessed as having a genuine fear or persecution or death. They are entitled to international protection and assistance
