Who can perform preventive maintenance?
The holder of a pilot certificate issued under part 61, with the exception of a Sport Pilot. A sport pilot may perform preventive maintenance on a light sport aircraft.

Preventive Maintenance Includes
- Changing of landing gear tires
- Replacing shock absorbers on landing gear
- Servicing landing gear struts
- Servicing wheel bearings
- Replacing safety wire and cotter keys
- Lubrication not requiring disassembly
- Making simple fabric patches
- Replenishing hydraulic fluid
- Painting/varnish/waxing the aircraft CANNOT PAINT AIRCRAFT!
- Repairing upholstery
- Simple repairs to fairings, non structural covers
- Replacing side windows
- Replacing safety belts
- Replacing seats
- Trouble shooting and repairing landing light wiring
- Replacing light bulbs (but not strobe/anti collision bulbs
- Replacing wheels and skis
- Replacing the cowling
- Changing spark plugs
- Replacing hose connections including fuel lines
- Replacing oil and fuel filters
- Changing batteries
- Servicing magnetic chip detectors
- Replacing tray mounted Nav and Comm systems (not autopilot, transponders, or DME)

Can a sport pilot return an aircraft to service following preventative maintenance?
Yes, provided the pilot owns or operates the aircraft and the aircraft is in the light sport category.

When must a 337 form be sent to the FAA?
Within 48 hours after the aircraft, airframe, engine, propeller, or appliance is approved for return to service or after the work is inspected
One copy place aboard the aircraft
One forwarded to the FAA Registration office
And one given to the aircraft owner
