Q

describe the sx technique of a thyroidectomy( AKA modified extracpsular thyroidectomy)
-which muscles are seperated?
-near which tracheal rings?
-

A

-cat in VD. neck extended. pad on neck
-sternohyoideus muscles
-thyroid is near 2-5th tracheal rings
-seperate parathroid

Q

4 potential surgical complications to thyroidectomy?

A

-recurrence
-laryngeal paralysis
-hypocalcemia (hypoparathyroidism)
-hypothyroidism

17
Q

hypothyroidism is often associated with concurrent CKD. why can this be difficult to diagnose

A

-low muscle mass so low creatinine
-hyperthyroid increases GFR so masks the kidney disease
-instead should run SDMA

18
Q

Two drug options for medical management of hyperthyroid

A

Methamizole
Carbimazole (which is metabolized to methamizole)
