Endocrine 2 Flashcards
Hypothyroidism
Sub-optimal levels of thyroid hormone
Slow metabolic rate
Range sin severity up to myxoedema being the most advanced form
Most common causes in adults
Hashimoto’s disease
Grave disease
Other Insufficient thyroid hormone Radioactive iodine Antithyroid medication Surgery
Hashimoto’s disease
Immune system attacks thyroid gland
Graves disease in
Autoimmune disease
Ultimately destroys thyroid gland (may be due to treatment used)
Hypothyroidism symptoms
Slow onset and early symptoms fatigue , slow speech
Personality changes
Weight gain
Anaemia
Decreased cardiac output
Increase risk in infection
Increase sensitivity to opioids and anaesthesia
Long standing hypothyroidism
Display myxoedema
Alters physical appearance
May progress myxoedema coma which progress to unconsciousness or death
Myxoedema
Impaired consciousness Caused by infection , drugs, cold, trauma Cardiovascular shock or collapse Hypotension hypoventilation Requires intensive support
Medical management of hypothyroidism
Restoration to euthyroid state aa safely as possible
Pharmacotherapy of hypothyroidism
Levothyroxine
Lifelong therapy
Preventing medication interactions and complications
Nursing diagnosis
Activity intolerance
Imbalance nutrition
Constipation
Impaired memory
Activity intolerance
Fatigue and depressed cognitive process
Imbalanced nutrition
More than body requirements related to calorie intake
Constipation
