Dry Cask Storage Flashcards
1
Q
What provides the confinement boundary for the spent nuclear fuel from the environment?
A
- The MPC (Baseplate, Shell, Lid, and closure ring)
2
Q
What are the 3 types of heat transfer for the MPC?
A
- Conduction (Through the metal)
- Convection (Helium)
- Radiated (through the shell and top)
3
Q
Why do we use helium in the MPC?
A
- Leak detection
- Inert atmosphere to prevent cladding corrosion (Chem Reaction)
- Cooling (Convection)
4
Q
What are the functions of the MPC?
A
- Structural
- Nuclear criticality
- Confinement boundary
- Heat removal
- Shielding
- Fluid penetrations
5
Q
What is the Time-to-Boil Contingency for the MPC with fuel in it?
A
- Required if within 4 hours of TTB
- Water Circulation System (WCS) is used
Circulate SFP water through the MPC - SFP water is pumped into the drain port
- Returned to SFP from the vent port
- Then Recalculate TTB
6
Q
When does the Loading Operations begin and end with MPC?
A
- LOADING OPERATIONS begin when the first fuel assembly is placed in the MPC
AND - ends when the TRANSFER CASK is suspended from or secured on the transporter.
7
Q
When does Transfer Operations begin and end?
A
- TRANSPORT OPERATIONS begin when TRANSFER CASK is first suspended from or secured on the transporter
AND - ends when the TRANSFER CASK is at its destination and no longer secured on or suspended from the transporter.
8
Q
If you compromise the MPC, what must you enter?
A
- An Unusual Event
9
Q
What does 10CFR72 State?
A
- NRC confers approval of a dry storage system design via granting a Certificate of Compliance
10
Q
What does the HI-Storm 100 Cask System consist of?
A
- MPC, HI-TRAC transfer Cask, and HISTORM storage overpack
