What is hypertension?
Systemic disease that develops when blood moves through the arteries at a higher than normal pressure
What refers to the pressure when the ventricles pump the blood out the heart?
Systolic pressure
What refers to the pressure when heart is filling blood?
Diastolic pressure
Should the systolic pressure be higher or the diastolic pressure?
Systolic
What is a normal blood pressure?
120/80
What are retinal signs that may be observed in a patient with hypertension?
Narrowing of arteries Arteriovenous nicking Copper or silver wiring Cotton wool spots Hemorrhages Hard exudate Optic disc swelling
What occurs when the arteries cross over the vein and place pressure on the vein?
Arteriovenous nicking
What occurs when the vessel wall thickens and looks like copper or silver wire?

What are often in a star shaped patters ; lipids from leaking blood vessels?
Hard exudate
What is the primary treatment for hypertensive retinopathy?
Reducing the blood pressure to improve control of the hypertension?
