Refers to a structure that is more ‘in back’ than another structure.
Posterior (aka. Dorsal, Dorsum)
Refers to a structure that is farther away from its source and is primarily used in reference to the limbs.
Distal
Refers to the same side as the reference point.
Ipsilateral
Refers to a structure that is closer to the surface of the body.
Superficial
Refers to a structure that is farther from the surface of the body.
Deep
Refers to a structure that is farther away from the mid-sagittal plane than another structure.
Lateral
Refers to a structure that is closer to the head or higher than another structure.
Superior (aka. Cranial)
Refers to the opposite side as the reference point.
Contralateral
Refers to a structure that is closer to the mid-sagittal plane than another structure.
Medial
Refers to a structure that is more ‘in front’ than another structure.
Anterior (aka. Ventral, Palmar, Volar)
Refers to a structure that is closest to its source and is primarily used in reference to the limbs.
Proximal
Refers to a structure that is closer to the feet or lower part of the body than another structure.
Inferior (aka. Caudal)
