Bones & Landmarks of the Lower Limb Flashcards
The longest and heaviest bone in the human body.
Femur
The widest part of the lower limb.
Greater Trochanter
Part of the femur that is roughly triangular in cross-sectional shape.
Shaft
Part of the femur that serves as an attachment point for the fibular collateral ligament of the knee.
Lateral Epicondyle
One of two projections on the lower extremity of the femur that is more prominent and broader than the other.
Lateral Condyle
The anterior part of the distal femur that articulates with the patella.
Patellar Surface (aka. Trochlear Groove)
One of two projections on the lower extremity of the femur that is larger than the other due to being more weight bearing.
Medial Condyle
Part of the femur that serves as an attachment point for the tibial collateral ligament of the knee.
Medial Epicondyle
A bony projection on the medial condyle of the femur.
Adductor Tubercle
A ridge of bone that runs in an inferomedial direction on the anterior surface of the femur.
Intertrochanteric Line
Projects from the posteromedial side of the femur located just inferior to the neck-shaft junction.
Lesser Trochanter
A flattened pyramidal process of bone, connecting the femoral head with the femoral shaft.
Neck
A small, oval-shaped dimple on the head of the femur.
Fovea (aka. Fovea of Head, Fovea Capitis)
Part of the femur that faces medially, superiorly, anteriorly and articulates with the acetabulum of the pelvis.
Head
A ridge on the femur located at the posterior aspect of the junction between the neck and the shaft.
