Bones & Landmarks of the Humerus Flashcards
The long bone in the upper arm.
Humerus
The smooth, spherical-like, proximal end of the humerus that is covered with articular cartilage and articulates with the glenoid fossa of the scapula.
Head of Humerus
The short, constricted part of the humerus that connects the head and body of the humerus. It separates the head from the greater and lesser tubercles.
Anatomical Neck of Humerus
The short, constricted part found at the proximal end of the body of the humerus and located distal to the greater and lesser tubercles. A weak area that is a common site for fractures.
Surgical Neck of Humerus
The large eminence found on the lateral aspect of the proximal end of the humerus. It projects laterally from the junction between the anatomical neck and body of the humerus.
Greater Tubercle
The small eminence found on the anterior aspect of the proximal end of the humerus. It projects anteriorly from the junction between the anatomical neck and body of the humerus.
Lesser Tubercle
The greater tubercle is palpable when the shoulder is _________ rotated. The lesser tubercle is palpable when the shoulder is __________ rotated.
Internally
Externally
The vertical, longitudinal depression found on the anterolateral aspect of the proximal end of the humerus between the greater and lesser tubercles.
Bicipital Groove (aka. Intertubercular Groove, Intertubercular Sulcus)
What travels through the bicipital groove?
Long Head Tendon of Biceps Brachii
The rough, triangular prominence found at the middle third of the anterolateral surface of the humerus.
Deltoid Tuberosity
The sharp, prominent margin located along the lateral aspect of the distal end of the body of the humerus.
Lateral Supracondylar Ridge of Humerus
The projection found at the distal end of the lateral supracondylar ridge.
Lateral Epicondyle of Humerus
The small, shallow depression found superior to the capitulum of the humerus. It accommodates the head of the radius during elbow flexion.
Radial Fossa
The small depression found superior to the trochlea of the humerus. It accommodates the coronoid process of the ulna during elbow flexion.
Coronoid Fossa
The smooth, convex projection found on the inferolateral aspect of the condyle of the humerus. It articulates with the head of the radius.
