• Mixed
• Sensory: sense of taste from the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue • Motor: facial expressions, and muscle tone in the face
• Paralysis can cause the face to sag – Ball’s Palsy
• Due to nerve damage from bacterial or viral infection, OR tumors
• Can cause loss of taste, decreased salivation, loss of the ability to close the eyes even during sleep,

Sensory, hearing and equilibrium, balance
Vestibulocochlear Nerve VIII
• Mixed, baroreceptors, superior and inferior ganglia
• Motor: muscles for swallowing and gagging
• Sensory: from the
throat and posterior 1/3
of the tongue(taste)

• mixed, parasympathetic!
• Pharynx, larynx, heart, GI tract

• Motor, muscles of the
upper back and neck to
turn the head
