Common Sense Model Flashcards
What does self-regulation involve?
Identification of goal
Selecting a strategy and implement
Strategy achieved goal or not?
What is our body’s goal?
Maintain/return to normal/healthy state
Basic assumptions of CSM model:
Patient as common-sense scientist
Patients regulate their experiences, symptoms and changes over time
What’s included in cognitive path of CSM model?
Appraisal -> Coping procedures, danger control -> representation of illness risk -> health messages
What’s included in the emotional path of the CSM model?
Appraisal -> coping procedures, fear control -> emotional reactions (e.g. fear, worry) -> health messages
What are the 5 compartments of illness perceptions?
Identity
Perceived Cause
Curability / controllability
Consequences
Timeline
What’s identity in disease?
Symptoms experienced by person as well as person’s label for disease
Importance of CSM model:
Predict health behaviours such as medication adherence
Timeline of disease:
Acute
Chronic
Cyclic
What can make a patient have a slower return to work and social duties after disease?
Beliefs in major consequences
Chronic timeline
