Clinical Anatomy: Nervous System Flashcards
The basic cell of the nervous system
Neuron
Neuron’s consist of:
- Multiple Dendrites
- Cell Body
- Nucleus
- Single Axon (myelinated or unmyelinated)
- Synaptic knob and vesicles
Connective tissue structure that surround the brain and spinal cord
Meninges
The 3 Layers of Meninges
- Dura Mater
- Arachnoid Mater
- Pia Mater
Layer of Meninges that directly attaches to the brain and spinal cord
Pia Mater
Interconnected cavities within the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem
Ventricles
Fluid within ventricles
Cerebral Spinal Fluid
Intervertebral disk at which the spinal cord ends
Between L1 and L2
Point at which the spinal cord ends
Conus Medullaris
The core of gray matter forming the anterior and posterior horns of the spinal cord
- Interneurons (anterior horn)
- Cell Bodies (posterior horn)
The simplest nerve pathway
Reflex Arc
Primary Motor Area
Frontal Lobe
Primary Sensory Area
Parietal Lobe
Part of the brainstem that separates the midbrain from the medulla oblongata
Pons
- Functions to coordinate skeletal muscle activity and maintain posture
- Has 2 hemispheres
- Consists of an outer and inner cortex connected by the vermis
Cerebellum
Number of Spinal Nerves
31
Rami that Form the Brachial Plexus
C5 to C8 and T1
Location of the Brachial Plexus
- Travels with the subclavian artery and it’s continuation (the axillary artery)
- B/t the anterior and middle scalenes
- B/t pectoralis minor and the upper ribs
Areas the Brachial Plexus Innervates
skin, joints, and muscles of the shoulder, chest, and upper limbs
- Nerve that consists of 2 divisions in the posterior thigh that innervate the hamstring muscles
- It is the largest/longest nerve
- It travels down the buttocks, thigh, and feet
Sciatic Nerve
